“The Missing Week.”  Myth has it that Elizabeth Short walked out the Olive Street door of the downtown Biltmore Hotel on January 9, 1947 and was not seen again, until her brutalized body was found six-days later- posed on an empty lot some six miles away at 39th and Norton.

Another person” Hearst” ruined to sell newspapers was Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle. In 1921 he was one of the highest paid actor/directors in the motion picture business. During a weekend party he held at the elegant Saint Francis Hotel in San Francisco, 25 year-old actress model, Virginia Rappe, attending the party, ran screaming from a bedroom. She took sick and died four days later. Arbuckle was charged with her rape and murder––Arbuckle had been set up––he was completely innocent. Regardless, Hearst crucified Arbuckle for another reason––circulation. Hearst was gratified by the Arbuckle scandal; he said later that it had “sold more newspapers than any event since the sinking of the Lusitania.”
